🚠 KOBE Guide: Sumaura Park — A Nostalgic Journey Above the Blue Sea

A nostalgic view of the Carlator leading to the revolving observatory in Sumaura Park, Kobe. The lush greenery and retro transport inspire the "slow time" rhythm of the kodiad Kobe art project.

🌊 Overview: Where Time Slows Down

Located on the western edge of Kobe, Sumaura Park is a place where the modern pace of the city fades into a gentle, nostalgic hum.
Nestled between the mountains and the sea, this park offers a unique "hillside rhythm" that has remained unchanged for decades.
It is a sanctuary for those seeking a quiet moment above the shimmering blue of Osaka Bay.

🎢 The Carlator & The Revolving Observatory

The landscape of Sumaura Park is defined by its iconic, retro transport and architecture:

  • The Carlator: Often called "the most uncomfortable ride in the world," this rare 1960s slope conveyor provides a shaky, slow-paced vibration that is strangely soothing. It represents a bygone era's rhythm—one that connects the mountain trail to the sky.
  • The Revolving Observatory: At the summit, the white revolving observatory offers a 360-degree diorama-like view. As the floor slowly turns, the landscape of Kobe, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and the vast sea unfold like a living piece of art.

☁ Atmosphere: Capturing the "Architecture of Silence"

Standing near the observatory, surrounded by lush greenery as seen in the photo above, you can feel a profound sense of "Ma" (intentional space).
Here, the "Architecture of Silence" is found in the balance between the mechanical hum of the vintage machinery and the vast, open horizon.
It is a place that invites reflection and a deep appreciation for the city’s nostalgic soul.

🚶 How to Enjoy Your Visit

  • The Ropeway Journey: Start with a scenic ride from the station to feel the scale of the hillside.
  • Nostalgic Moments: Take the Carlator and enjoy the gentle, shaky rhythm as you ascend.
  • Panoramic Gazing: Spend time at the revolving observatory to see the "white gateway" of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge contrasting with the blue sea.

📍 How to Visit (Access)

  • By Train: Take the Sanyo Railway to Sumaura-koen Station. The ropeway entrance is located immediately outside the station.
  • Tip: Visit on a clear day to experience the full "vertical rhythm" from the mountains down to the coast.

🎮 Connecting to "kodiad"

In our Kobe art project, kodiad, the Suma area captures this "slow time" and the nostalgic pulse of the western coast.
While we haven't reproduced these specific retro structures, we have woven the feeling of this hillside into our diorama world.

We invite you to experience this quiet soul of Kobe in the metaverse:
